The Woman in Black

The primary target audience for the Woman in Black are young adults ranging from 12-18 year olds, being a mixture of both males and females. The main actor within the film is Daniel Radcliffe, the main thing he is known for is playing the part of Harry Potter. This then makes their primary target audience aimed towards Harry Potter fans, and those who enjoy horrors. The secondary target audience would be aimed towards the older age bracket leaning towards those who are 18+. It would also be those who enjoy films as a whole, those that take regular cinema trips.

One of the most important things about the making of this film was how it was marketed. It is very important for the marketing of the film to be successful. If the marketing is unsuccessful the film will not make a lot of money. They had a massive advantage with Daniel Radcliffe taking on the main acting role, as he is such a well-known actor. On the poster for the Woman in Black, Daniel Radcliffe’s face takes up about half of the page. When someone looks at Daniel Radcliffe their instant reaction is ‘Harry Potter’. It then gets the audience questioning as to what it would be like to watch Radcliffe act in a different film other than Harry Potter. This is what engaged the majority of the audience. Shortly before the film was released, the book was released in a new cover of Daniel Radcliffe. To target their target audience they also used social networking sites and viral marketing. I think that all of the marketing materials were appropriate for the film as the film became very successful targeting a wide audience. The film had a very big release showing in 2855 cinemas.

The film cost roughly around 15 million US dollars which is a low budget with a 54 million dollar domestic gross. Which is why it was such a box office success, it spent three weeks at the top of the charts in the U.K topping the previous record holder of Nicole Kidman’s The Others from 2001.

I think that the main reason why the film was successful is because the protagonist was played by Daniel Radcliffe. This was the next big film he had done since the success of Harry Potter, meaning it was likely for his fans to see his next film. Linking back to his face being used for the teaser poster. The second reason why the film was a huge success was from the amount of advertising. They advertised over a numerous amount of platforms which included radio, billboards and TV.  As well as targeting their by advertising in areas they knew would get attention they also has a large secondary audience. This was due to the size of the advertisement.
